About
Thorkell Ragnar Gretarsson (1997) is an Icelandic guitarist and composer based in The Hague and Rotterdam. He grew up in a small fishing village in the southeast corner of Iceland, called Höfn. His interest in music and guitar playing sparked early on and he started taking guitar lessons at age 10. In his teenage years Thorkell played in various bands, ranging all the way from heavy metal to jazz ensembles.
He moved to ReykjavÃk in 2016 and did a preparatory course for a conservatory.
Thorkell participated in MúsÃktilraunir 2018 (Icelandic battle of the bands) with his free jazz trio called Mókrókar. They finished in 2nd place and Thorkell got awarded as the best guitarist of the competition. In March of 2020 Mókrókar released their debut album, called MÓK.

Thorkell gratuated with a bachelors degree in jazz guitar performance from Codarts Rotterdam in 2023 and is currently doing his masters studies at Norges Musikkhøgskole.
During his time in the Netherlands Thorkell has participated in many different projects and ensembles, and explored various styles within the genre of jazz both as a leader and a sideman. His current main projects are his trio; "Ragnarök trio" and a duo collaboration with singer Björg Blöndal.
As a composer and a performer, he strives to be sincere yet adventurous, channeling the raw energy of rock'n roll and intertwining it with free improvisation.

Thorkell has performed in various concerts and festivals with different projects and line-ups of different sizes ranging all the way from duos to orchestras.
